•These decay series include alpha, beta and gamma emitters. 4 In the uranium-238 decay series there are eight radioisotopes starting with 238 92 U that decay by alpha emission, and six radioisotopes that decay by beta emission. The final product of this series is a stable isotope. The symbol for this product is A) 206 82 Pb B) 206 70 Yb C) 222 86 Rn D) 208 82 Pb E) none of these Uploaded by: y20122 Thus, uranium-238 decays through α-particle emission to form thorium-234 according to the equation: 238 92 U → l234 90 Th +4 2 He Note that the sum of the subscripts (atomic numbers or charges) is the same on each side of the equation. Also, the sum of the superscripts (masses) is the same on each side of the equation. Notable exceptions include (or Th-232) with a half-life of years, and (or U-238) with a half-life of years.

U 238 decay series

The alpha decays cause the number of protons and neutrons to diminish by 2, whereas beta-negative decay diminishes the number of neutrons by 1 and increases the number of protons by 1. The instability caused by the alpha decay is corrected by the eventual beta decay, leading to the stable nucleus of lead 206, with its 82 protons and 124 neutrons. As already stated earlier, radiogenic radionuclides are part of three decay series, which all start with decay of primordial isotopes of uranium (235 U, 238 U) and thorium (232 Th). Interestingly, each series contains a radioactive isotope of radon, namely, actinon (219 Rn), thoron (220 Rn), and radon (222 Rn) and ends with a stable isotope of lead. Radiogenic radionuclides are produced by alpha- and beta transformations, though many of these radionuclides are also gamma emitters. The series starts with uranium-238. The nuclear disintegration of uranium-238 forms radium-226 which disintegrates to form radon gas (radon-222). Radon decays to form a series of daughter nuclides, most of which are alpha-particle-releasing isotopes, such as polonium-210.

For Uranium-Thorium dating, the initial ratio of 230 Th/ 234 U at the time of sample formation must be known or calculated. With time, Thorium 230 accumulates in the sample through radiometric decay.
